The builder
Characters
Characters is where you tune how it feels to walk around your world. It is a panel of sliders for the player, not a brush.
For the game itself, see the 3D game maker and the AI game maker.
What it controls
Pick Characters in the tool column and the player’s settings open in the panel on the right. In a 3D world it carries six sliders: Walk speed, Run speed, Jump height, Field of view, Look pitch limit and Look sensitivity.
Walk speed, Run speed and Jump height are the movement. Field of view, Look pitch limit and Look sensitivity are the camera: how wide the view is, how far up and down you can look, and how fast the view turns.
The movement half is not 3D-only — a person in a flat world walks, falls and jumps as well. What the panel holds there is that person's own set of numbers: walk and run speed, how long the body takes to reach a speed and to lose it, air control, gravity, jump apex, body size and step length. The three camera sliders are not among them, because there is no look direction to set in a flat world. Its camera is framed instead by three rectangles Characters draws on the 2D view — what is in view, the dead zone, and how far the view may scroll — whose edges you drag.
Tune it by playing it
These are the settings most worth changing while actually moving. Movement that feels right in a screenshot often feels wrong at speed, and the only way to find out is to walk the world.
Change a slider, then press Play, or Restart on the Game screen’s bar if the game is already running, and walk it again. Each change is kept in your project, and Ctrl+Z undoes it.
Characters is in the tool column only when your world has a player. Add one first — that is one of the things Flockbay can do for you.
