Best free AI game generator: what free usually means
By Eduardo Orellana · Updated
Free in this category almost never means unlimited. It means a credit balance, a watermark, or a game that lives on someone else's server. Knowing which kind you are being offered is most of the decision. Flockbay is free, AI included: free hosted AI every day, or your own Claude, ChatGPT, agent or API key. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, on the official Godot engine.
AppImage, x86_64. Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 39 or newer.
Intel or AMD Chromebook, with Linux turned on.
The four kinds of free
The first is a credit balance. You get some quantity of generation, it runs out, and you decide whether to pay. This is the most common and the most honest of the four, because the limit is legible and you can feel it approaching.
The second is free with a watermark or an export lock. You can make the thing but you cannot take it anywhere, which means the free tier is a demonstration rather than a tool. Worth knowing before you spend a weekend in it.
The third is free hosting. Your game is playable at a link and lives on their servers. Pleasant while the company exists and while the link is free, and completely outside your control on both counts.
The fourth is free because the software is open source, which usually means no AI in it at all and a real learning curve instead. Godot itself is in this category and it is genuinely excellent if you are willing to learn to program.

Which kind Flockbay is
The download is free on Windows, macOS and Linux, and the world tools are free to use. The AI is a fifth kind of free, and the one with a condition: the chat and asset generation cost real money to run. Flockbay's hosted AI is free every day with no sign-up, because the app makes the account on first launch. On your own AI (your Claude or ChatGPT plan, your own agent, or an API key) that money goes to the company whose AI you connect, and Flockbay is free.
Demo, the hosted model, is free each day, and it comes back the next day. What Flockbay costs is nothing to start. Flockbay builds from a library of ready-made objects, or with Godot's own shapes. There is no better engine or watermark removal to pay for, because there is no watermark and there is only one engine; the optional plans buy more hosted AI.
What is not metered is what you do by hand. Sculpting terrain, moving props, repainting a path with the world tools in the Godot editor, and playing your game: that is your machine doing work, and it uses no AI at all.

The part that stays yours
Your project is a real Godot project on your own disk. Godot is open source and free, and the game you built runs locally on the copy bundled with the app. If you stopped using the app and deleted your account, the project is still a project and still opens in a free engine.
That is the meaningful sense of free in this category and it is worth more than a generous credit allowance. The question to ask any free tool is not how much you get, it is what you keep.
One more, less obvious: what happens to my account if I do not use it for six months. Projects that live on a server are subject to retention policies. Projects that live on your disk are subject to your backup habits, which at least you control.

Where a free generator beats this
If you want to type a sentence and see something running in ninety seconds, a browser generator will do it and this will not. Flockbay is a download, it takes a moment to install, and getting to a first playable thing is a longer path because a brief comes before the build rather than a roll of the dice.
For a jam idea, a joke, or convincing yourself an idea is worth pursuing, that speed is the right trade. Use the fast thing for that.
The constraints, stated plainly
It is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. Not a browser tool, not a phone app, and it requires an install.
You need an internet connection to build, because the chat, asset generation and world data come over the network. There is no offline mode. Playing what you built does not need a connection.
Flockbay builds the world and writes the GDScript from a brief you approve, and you judge what it made by playing. Nobody hands you a finished game.
Questions worth asking any free tier
What runs out, and how will I know before it does. A limit you discover mid-session is worse than a smaller limit stated up front.
What can I export, and in what format. This is the question that decides whether you are building an asset or renting a demo.
What changes if I pay. If the answer includes better output or fewer restrictions on what the game itself can be, the free tier was a trailer. Here the world tools are free and complete, and the optional plans buy more hosted AI and stronger hosted models, never a better engine. Paying a model company changes which model builds, not the engine.
None of these questions are hostile. Every tool in this category has answers, and the good ones give them without being pushed. It is the vagueness that should worry you rather than the limits.

Questions
- Is the free version actually usable?
- It is the whole app: the world tools, the full engine, and Flockbay on its free hosted AI or your own. Nothing about it produces a worse game, and the optional plans add more hosted AI, not a better engine.
- Is there a watermark?
- No. There is no watermark and no export lock.
- What happens to my game if I stop using it?
- It is a Godot project on your disk and Godot is free and open source. It does not stop being yours.
- Can I use it without an account?
- The app makes a free account for you on first launch, with no sign-up, and you can save it later. Flockbay is free, AI included: free hosted AI every day, or your Claude or ChatGPT plan, your own agent, or an API key.
- Is there anything to pay for?
- Only if you want more hosted AI: the optional plans are Hobby $20, Indie Developer $60 and Studio $200 a month. Demo is free each day. On your own AI, it is paid for where you already pay for it. Flockbay builds from a library of ready-made objects, or with Godot's own shapes.
