Free vs paid AI game makers: what the money is actually for

By Eduardo Orellana · Updated

Flockbay is free on your own Claude or ChatGPT plan. Claude Pro or Max, or ChatGPT Plus or higher, builds a real Godot project in the Godot editor. Claude Free and ChatGPT Free do not run here. More models are optional, a credit reload at API prices. Windows today. The engine is the official Godot release. Nothing in this category is free to run. A language model costs money every time it answers, so every free tier is paid for by something — a limit, an upsell, your project living on their servers, or investors. Knowing which one you are in is the whole question.

Why free is never free here

Every time you describe a behaviour, a model somewhere processes it and someone pays for that. Asset generation costs more. This is not like free software, where the marginal copy is free — the marginal use has a bill attached.

So a free tier is a decision about who absorbs that cost and what they get for it. There is nothing sinister in this; it is just worth knowing, because the shape of the answer determines what happens to you in month two.

Four models cover almost everything in the category.

The four models

A usage limit. You get a real product with a cap, and paying raises the cap. This is the most honest arrangement because the free tier is the actual product, so you can evaluate it properly before spending anything.

A crippled tier. The free version is a smaller engine, or exports are locked, or the good capabilities are behind the wall. You learn nothing about the real product from it, and you often discover this after a fortnight.

Your project as the payment. Free to use, and your work lives on their servers, in their format, feeding their community and their platform. Perfectly legitimate, and it makes instant sharing possible — the cost is that leaving is not a thing you can do.

Investor-funded, priced below cost to grow. Genuinely the best deal available while it lasts, and it does not last. The prices change when the funding does.

What paid tiers usually buy

A larger allowance of the same thing. This is the common one and it is the least interesting, which is a compliment: it means the free tier was the real thing.

Capabilities the free tier does not have. Export, higher-quality generation, integrations. Reasonable, and it is what makes the crippled-tier problem hard to spot in advance.

And sometimes ownership terms — rights, publishing, or removing a branding requirement. Worth reading before you build a year of work on top of a free tier.

Where Flockbay sits

Flockbay is free on your own AI: your Claude or ChatGPT plan, your own agent, or an API key. There is no team, seat or enterprise tier, because it is a desktop app.

That is a fifth arrangement: the tool is free because the model bill goes to the company you already pay for a model. Godot is bundled in every copy, the game runs locally on your machine, and nothing is export-locked or watermarked.

Driving the app with your own agent instead of the built-in AI is free too, with a free Flockbay account.

What free gets you here, honestly

Everything Flockbay does: the whole builder, the whole engine, and Flockbay, running on the AI you connect. Build something small and play it, which is the only test that tells you anything.

What it does not get you is unlimited AI assistance for nothing, because that is the part with a bill attached, and the bill comes from your AI provider. Flockbay builds from a library of ready-made objects, or with Godot's own shapes. None of this changes the boundaries: it is a desktop app for Windows, building needs an internet connection, and playing what you built does not.

Questions

Is there a genuinely free AI game maker?
Free tiers exist everywhere. Unlimited free does not, because model use costs money per request.
What does Flockbay's free plan include?
Everything: the full app, the full builder, Godot bundled inside, and Flockbay on your own AI.
Is the engine different on paid plans?
No. A plan changes who runs the AI, and nothing else: there is one engine and one builder for everyone.
Are there export restrictions on free?
No. Your project is a normal Godot project.
Is there a team or enterprise plan?
No. It is a desktop app for one person. Flockbay is free on your own AI, and each plan is for one person too.
