Install on Linux and ChromeOS

Flockbay for Linux is one AppImage for 64-bit Intel or AMD PCs, for Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 39 (glibc 2.35) or newer. A Chromebook with an Intel or AMD processor runs the same AppImage in ChromeOS’s Linux development environment.

Installing on Linux

  1. On flockbay.com/download/, press the Linux build’s Download. It saves Flockbay-<version>-x86_64.AppImage. The same page has a terminal line that downloads and runs it in one go.
  2. Make it executable and run it. In a terminal, from the default Downloads folder, run the line below. Or in your file manager: Properties › Allow executing file as program, then open it.
  3. Flockbay opens: open a Godot project or describe a new game.
Terminal
chmod +x ~/Downloads/Flockbay-*-x86_64.AppImage && ~/Downloads/Flockbay-*-x86_64.AppImage

WebKitGTK 4.1 and the keyring

Flockbay uses your distribution’s GTK 3 and WebKitGTK 4.1 rather than bundling its own. If WebKitGTK 4.1 is missing, the AppImage names the package to install: libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0 on Ubuntu or Debian, webkit2gtk4.1 on Fedora.

Your sign-in and any API keys are kept in the desktop’s Secret Service, such as GNOME Keyring or KWallet.

Terminal
# Ubuntu or Debian
sudo apt install libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0

# Fedora
sudo dnf install webkit2gtk4.1

Installing on a Chromebook

Turn Linux on first: Settings › About ChromeOS › Developers › Linux development environment, with 40 GB of disk. School and work Chromebooks usually have Linux turned off by the admin. ARM Chromebooks are not supported.

On flockbay.com/download/, copy the Chromebook line into the Terminal app. It installs WebKitGTK 4.1 and GNOME Keyring, which ChromeOS’s Linux environment does not include, then downloads Flockbay and opens it. The first time, the keyring asks you to choose a password, or none. After that, Flockbay is in your launcher under Linux apps.

ChromeOS’s Linux environment has no GPU acceleration for games, so the editor and Play use Godot’s Compatibility renderer there instead of Forward+. Shaders written for Forward+ may look different.

Where it lives, and uninstalling

The AppImage runs from wherever you keep it. The app’s own data, its settings, chats and logs, is in ~/.local/share/com.flockbay.desktop. Your projects are where you create or open them, ~/Documents/Flockbay by default.

To uninstall, delete the AppImage. Delete ~/.local/share/com.flockbay.desktop too to remove the app’s data; your projects are not in it.
