How to market your game on Reddit, and on every other channel

On Reddit, post as a developer showing work, not an advertiser: read each subreddit's rules, lead with a GIF or short clip of gameplay, title it with what is interesting rather than the game's name, and stay in the comments. Most subreddits limit self-promotion, and accounts that only post their own game get removed. The same idea holds on every channel: show the game moving, talk to people, and pick the two or three channels where your genre's players already are.
Reddit rewards the post, not the poster
A clip that makes people stop gets upvoted whoever posted it; a link to a store page gets downvoted or removed. Developers who do well on Reddit post the interesting moment, answer every comment, and only mention the Steam page when someone asks.
Posting on Reddit
- Read the subreddit's rules and its self-promotion limits before posting.
- Use a GIF or short video that loops; the first second has to read.
- Title it with what is interesting: "I made the crops fight back", not "My game, out now".
- Reply to comments for the first hours; that is where the post grows.
- Put the Steam link in a comment if the subreddit allows it.
Use an account that also takes part in the community. See the best subreddits to post your game.
Other channels
- YouTube: devlogs and Shorts; devlogs build a following over months.
- X and Bluesky: other developers more than players; #ScreenshotSaturday and genre tags.
- TikTok: short clips reach players who have never heard of you.
- Discord: your own server for the players you already have.
- Twitch: streaming development, or getting streamers to play.
- Facebook groups: genre and platform groups; same rules as Reddit.
When to post, and how much time
Post when your players are awake, often weekday evenings in North America and Europe, and check each platform's own analytics after a month. A solo developer can usually keep up two or three channels in a few hours a week; more than that and development suffers.
