Do you need a website for your indie game?

Your Steam page does the selling, so a website is not required. It earns its place by doing what Steam cannot: collecting email addresses you own, giving press and creators one link with everything, ranking in search for your game's name, and surviving if you change stores. For most indies, one page is enough. Add an email signup with clear consent, a domain if you can, and a separate studio site only once you have several games.
Steam owns your wishlists; you own your mailing list
Every wishlist lives on Steam, and Steam decides when to email those players. An email list is the one audience you can reach directly, on any platform, for every future game. That alone justifies a page with a signup.
What a site adds
- An email signup you own.
- One link for press and creators: trailer, screenshots, press kit, contact.
- Search: a page that ranks for the game's name when people look it up.
- Independence: it stays if you add stores or change publisher.
Email signups
Say what people will get and how often, keep proof of consent, and make unsubscribing easy; privacy laws such as the GDPR expect it. Send something when it matters: a demo, a date, a launch.
Domains, search and studio sites
A domain with the game's name is worth its small yearly fee once you are sure of the name. For search, give the page a title with the game's name and genre, a description, and real text, not only images. A studio site with all your games makes sense from the second game; until then, the game is the brand.
Where Flockbay fits
Flockbay's AI builds a one-page site from your game, with an email signup stored with proof of consent that you export (Flockbay never mails your list). Building and the .zip are free; publishing on your game's flockbay.app address is free in beta until 1 December 2026.
