How to move your Steam release date without losing momentum

You can change a Steam release date in Steamworks up to two weeks before it; inside those two weeks it is locked, so decide early. Moving the date moves the game on upcoming lists (a vague date is filed at the last day of its range), and wishlists stay, though players who lose interest can remove the game. If the new day is not certain, switch the display back to a month or quarter while keeping an exact intended date behind it. Announce a delay once, on the store page, with the new window, one concrete reason and something new to show. A delay rarely hurts as much as a launch that was not ready.

Delays are common; surprise delays are what hurt

Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced in February 2019 and released on Steam on 4 September 2025, after years of waiting that kept it near the top of Steam's most-wishlisted charts. That is the extreme case, and it carries an obvious reading: a beloved game can be delayed for years without losing its audience. The less obvious one is that most games are not Silksong, and for them the way a delay is handled matters as much as its length.

What players remember is not the delay but how they heard about it. A clear post with a reason and a new window reads as care; a date that silently changes, or a launch-day patch that should have been a delay, reads as trouble. Valve's own rules make the decision time-boxed: after a certain point, the date cannot move at all.

Valve's rules

From Valve's Release Dates documentation:

  • Change it up to two weeks before the date. Inside the two-week window the game starts appearing more in upcoming lists, and the date can no longer be adjusted.
  • Switch the display freely before release: from an exact day back to a month, a quarter, a year or Coming Soon.
  • Keep an exact intended date behind any display. Valve uses it to plan reminders and event invitations, such as Next Fest.
  • Upcoming lists follow the new date. A month or quarter is filed at the last day of its range, and a game with no date sits behind games with dates.
  • Weekends are hidden in the date picker and not recommended, because the Steam team may not be available to help.
  • When unsure, ask. Valve says Steamworks support can advise on dates.

Should you delay? The two-minute test

Four questions decide most delays:

  1. Would launch-week reviews be worse than Mostly Positive? GameDiscoverCo found games that underperformed at launch had a median first-week review score of 67%, against 91% for games that did well. A known crash, a broken save or a missing core feature is a reason to move the date.
  2. Are the wishlists there? Steam's Popular Upcoming list took around 5,000 to 7,000 wishlists to enter in January 2026, by Chris Zukowski's scrape. A game far below that gains more from a few more months of building interest than from launching on time.
  3. Does the new date collide with something? A seasonal sale (with its 30-day eligibility rule), Next Fest, or a big release in your genre. See the Steam sale calendar.
  4. Can you afford it? A delay costs runway; a bad launch costs the game.

If the answers say delay, delay once, by enough. Two small delays read worse than one honest one.

How to change it, step by step

  1. Decide before the two-week lock. Inside it, the date cannot move.
  2. In Steamworks, update the intended release date and, if the new day is uncertain, change the display to a month or quarter.
  3. Check the launch discount and pricing still make sense for the new date, and that no planned price change falls within 30 days of launch.
  4. Check the calendar: the new date's distance from the next seasonal sale, and Next Fest weeks.
  5. Tell press and creators who had keys or embargo dates, before the public post.
  6. Post the announcement on the store page.

How to announce it

  1. Post one announcement on the store page and Community Hub; followers see it in their activity feed.
  2. Give the new window, a month or a quarter if the day is not certain, rather than a date you may have to move again.
  3. Give the reason in one honest sentence: polish, a feature, a fix, a port.
  4. Show something new: a screenshot or clip of what the time buys. A delay with nothing to show reads as stalling.
  5. Repeat it on your other channels the same day, so players hear it from you first.

Moving the date earlier

Dates move forward too. Because approved games do not release on their own, the release happens when you press Release App, so a game can launch before the date it shows as long as its store page has been Coming Soon for two weeks and both reviews are approved. Pulling a date in is rarely wise, though: wishlisters, press and creators planned around the old one, and a surprise early launch spends the launch-day email on players who were not expecting it. If the game is ready early, announce the new date with at least the same notice you would give a delay.

What a delay does to your numbers

Wishlists stay when the date moves; Steam emails wishlisters at the real release, whenever it comes. Some players remove a game they lose interest in, so expect a dip in daily wishlist adds around the announcement and watch the deletions in your wishlist report. The longer risk is staleness: GameDiscoverCo found underperforming games had spent an average of 411 days on Steam before release, against 214 for games that did well. That is a correlation, partly because troubled projects slip, but it is a reason to keep a delayed page alive with updates rather than let it go quiet.

Where Flockbay fits

Flockbay drafts the delay announcement and the posts, and cuts a clip of what changed from your real gameplay, so the post shows what the time is buying. Its playtest links bring back the crashes that decide whether a date holds. The publishing tools are free in beta until 1 December 2026. The date itself is changed by you in Steamworks.

Questions

Does delaying a Steam game lose wishlists?
Wishlists stay when the date moves, and Steam emails wishlisters at release. Some players remove the game if they lose interest, so announce the delay clearly and keep the page active.
How late can I change my Steam release date?
Up to two weeks before the date. Inside those two weeks the date is locked.
Does Steam tell wishlisters when my release date changes?
Steam's wishlist emails are for the release itself and for discounts of 20% or more, so tell players yourself: an announcement on the store page reaches followers, and your other channels reach the rest.
Should I show an exact release date on Steam?
Only when you are sure. Until then show a month or quarter, with the exact intended date set behind it in Steamworks for Valve's reminders.
