VideoPlayer in Godot 4: it is VideoStreamPlayer now

By Eduardo Orellana · Updated

VideoPlayer is called VideoStreamPlayer in Godot 4. In a Godot 4 project, VideoPlayer.new() fails to parse with Identifier "VideoPlayer" not declared in the current scope. Did you mean to use "VideoStreamPlayer"?.

What Godot is checking

GDScript resolves every name when the script loads. VideoPlayer is not a class in Godot 4, so the analyzer stops before anything runs, and because the name is in Godot's own table of Godot 3 renames, the message names the replacement.

The converter carries VideoPlayer to VideoStreamPlayer. It plays an Ogg Theora (.ogv) VideoStreamTheora set in stream; autoplay, play(), stop() and the finished signal work as before.

Reproduce it

A Godot 3 script that creates a VideoPlayer in code, in a Godot 4 project.

extends Node

func _ready():
	var video = VideoPlayer.new()
	print(video)

What Godot 4.7.2 prints

Godot Engine v4.7.2.stable.mono.official.ed1daf0bf - https://godotengine.org

SCRIPT ERROR: Parse Error: Identifier "VideoPlayer" not declared in the current scope. Did you mean to use "VideoStreamPlayer"?
   at: GDScript::reload (res://answers/videoplayer-in-godot-4/repro.gd:4)
ERROR: Failed to load script "res://answers/videoplayer-in-godot-4/repro.gd" with error "Parse error".
   at: load (modules/gdscript/gdscript_resource_format.cpp:46)

Fix it

A VideoStreamPlayer ready for a cutscene; assign an .ogv file to stream to play it.

extends Control

func _ready() -> void:
	var video := VideoStreamPlayer.new()
	video.expand = true
	video.finished.connect(func(): print("cutscene over"))
	add_child(video)
	print(video.get_class(), ", Theora built in: ", ClassDB.class_exists("VideoStreamTheora"), ", playing: ", video.is_playing())

What the fixed script prints

Godot Engine v4.7.2.stable.mono.official.ed1daf0bf - https://godotengine.org

VideoStreamPlayer, Theora built in: true, playing: false

Verified on Godot 4.7.2

Both scripts on this page were run headless on Godot 4.7.2 (4.7.2.stable.mono.official.ed1daf0bf) on 18 October 2026, and the output above is what Godot printed, unedited.

Questions

Can Godot 4 play MP4?
Not built in. Convert the video to Ogg Theora (.ogv), or use a GDExtension that adds other formats.
How do I know when a cutscene ends?
Connect the finished signal.
