Sprite in Godot 4: it is Sprite2D now

By Eduardo Orellana · Updated

Sprite is called Sprite2D in Godot 4, beside Sprite3D, and its properties kept their names. In a Godot 4 project, Sprite.new() fails to parse with Identifier "Sprite" not declared in the current scope. Did you mean to use "Sprite2D"?.

What Godot is checking

GDScript resolves every name when the script loads. Sprite is not a class in Godot 4, so the analyzer stops before anything runs, and because the name is in Godot's own table of Godot 3 renames, the message names the replacement.

The 3-to-4 converter carries Sprite to Sprite2D. Its texture, centered, offset, flip_h, flip_v, hframes, vframes and frame properties are unchanged, so most Godot 3 sprite code works once the class name is fixed.

Reproduce it

A Godot 3 script that creates a Sprite in code, in a Godot 4 project.

extends Node

func _ready():
	var sprite = Sprite.new()
	print(sprite)

SCRIPT ERROR: Parse Error: Identifier "Sprite" not declared in the current scope. Did you mean to use "Sprite2D"?

Fix it

Create a Sprite2D and use its sprite-sheet properties.

extends Node

func _ready() -> void:
	var sprite := Sprite2D.new()
	sprite.hframes = 4
	sprite.frame = 2
	sprite.flip_h = true
	add_child(sprite)
	print(sprite.get_class(), " frame ", sprite.frame, " of ", sprite.hframes)

Verified on Godot 4.7.2

Both scripts on this page were run headless on Godot 4.7.2 (4.7.2.stable.mono.official.ed1daf0bf) on 18 October 2026, and the output above is what Godot printed, unedited.

Questions

Is AnimatedSprite renamed too?
Yes, to AnimatedSprite2D, and its frames property is sprite_frames now.
Do my .tscn files need editing?
Godot 4's project converter rewrites the node types in scenes. A scene opened without converting shows the node as missing its type.
