How to find playtesters for your indie game
2 min read
By Eduardo Orellana ·
Find playtesters where players of your genre already gather: genre subreddits and Discords (following their self-promotion rules), local game-dev meetups and events, playtest-swap groups where developers test each other's games, your own followers and mailing list, Steam Playtest from your store page, and restricted itch.io pages. For recorded sessions with recruited strangers, paid services exist. Ask for the players you are making the game for, not for anyone.
Ten strangers in your genre beat a hundred friends
A playtest is only as good as its players. Your friends want to be kind; random players test a game they would never buy. The testers worth finding are the ones who would buy your game, and they gather in predictable places.
Free places to find them
- Genre communities: subreddits and Discord servers for your genre, using their feedback threads and rules.
- Developer swap groups: test someone's game, they test yours; developers give sharp feedback.
- Local meetups and events: watching someone play in person teaches the most.
- Your followers: devlog viewers, newsletter readers, your Discord.
- Steam Playtest: a signup button on your store page, free, batches you control.
- itch.io: a restricted page with a password or download keys.
Paid
Services such as PlaytestCloud and Antidote recruit players and record their sessions, priced per player or by subscription. They suit specific questions, such as "does the tutorial work for new players?", once the game is far enough along. See our playtesting services comparison.
How to ask
Say what the game is, how long the test takes, what you want to learn, and what testers get (credit, an early key, your test of their game). Make joining one click. Thank everyone, and tell them what you changed.
Where Flockbay fits
Flockbay turns a build into a link. Testers you find install the free Flockbay Playtest app, play your build sandboxed (it cannot read their files or open their browser), and their reports come back to your game's chat. Community playtesting, where Flockbay developers test each other's games, is free. Playtest links are free in beta until 1 December 2026.
