Playtesting services compared

Playtesting tools fall into two groups. Free ones distribute your build to testers you find yourself: Steam Playtest (a signup on your store page), restricted itch.io pages, and Flockbay's playtest links (with crash and telemetry reports, free in beta until 1 December 2026). Paid services recruit players for you and record their sessions with voice and video, such as PlaytestCloud and Antidote, priced per player or by subscription, often on quote. Paid suits specific questions once you have something worth recording.
Are you paying for testers, or for tooling?
Every option does one or both of two jobs: finding testers, and capturing what they did. Free tools capture well but leave finding testers to you. Paid services recruit people in your target audience and hand you recordings. Decide which job you need done.
Free
- Steam Playtest: signups on your store page, batches you control, no telemetry of its own.
- itch.io Restricted pages: password or key access, no telemetry.
- Flockbay playtest links: testers install the free Flockbay Playtest app; crashes, errors, frame times, play time, hardware and input come back, with clips when testers allow it (Windows). Free in beta until 1 December 2026.
- Developer swap groups: free testers, other developers.
Paid
- PlaytestCloud: recruits players and records sessions with think-aloud; subscription tiers and an indie offer, priced on its site or on request.
- Antidote: self-serve studies or a full service with recruitment and analysis; surveys, gameplay footage, controller input.
Prices change and several are quoted on request; compare current pricing on each site, and try a trial before committing.
Choosing
Early and broad (is it fun, does it crash): free tools and testers you find. Specific and later (does the tutorial work for strangers in my audience): a paid recruited round. Most indies need the first far more often than the second.
Where Flockbay fits
Flockbay is the free option that captures the most: its AI tests every change itself, and playtest links bring people's reports back to the chat as something the AI can replay and fix.
