A Godot voxel game template: mine, build, farm and survive
By Eduardo Orellana · Updated
Flockbay ships a Voxel Sandbox template, free under New from template: a streamed voxel world with biomes and weather, mining and building, crafting and farming, and night sieges. It is a survival sandbox in GDScript, built to stay at 60 frames a second. Flockbay is free, AI included: free hosted AI every day, or your own Claude, ChatGPT, agent or API key. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, on the official Godot engine.

AppImage, x86_64. Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 39 or newer.
Intel or AMD Chromebook, with Linux turned on.
The Voxel Sandbox template in Flockbay
Mine, build, farm and survive in a streamed voxel world with biomes, weather, night sieges and blood moons. It is a 3D Godot 4 project in GDScript, open source under the MIT licence, and free like the rest of Flockbay.
Streamed voxel terrain with biomes from meadow and jungle to desert, snow, mountains, oceans and rivers.
A day and night cycle, seasons and weather, and structures with loot to find.
Mining, building, crafting, smelting, chests, farming and cooking, with tool and armour tiers and a hunger and health loop.
Night sieges of zombies, wildlife, a 27-slot inventory, a minimap, rebindable keys and save and load, with greedy meshing and chunks built off the main thread.
Start a game from Voxel Sandbox
In the Flockbay app, press New from template on Home, pick Voxel Sandbox and press Create. On a first run, answer 3D and then Template, and Continue makes the game. Flockbay downloads the template into a new game folder and opens it in the Godot editor as an ordinary Godot 4 project you own. Tell Flockbay what to change first: it writes a short brief from the template, asks before it builds, and plays each change before you do.
What people usually ask for first: a fishing rod with fish per biome; a swamp biome with its own enemy; a boss on the third blood moon.
The hard part of a voxel game is the meshing, and it is done
A voxel world lives or dies on how it turns blocks into meshes. A naive version builds one quad per visible block face and stalls the main thread every time a chunk changes. This template merges faces with greedy meshing, builds chunks off the main thread and shares materials, which is the difference between a demo and a world you can walk across.
That is also why its features are where they are: biomes, structures, fauna and weather are all built on top of a chunk system that can afford them. Keep that budget in mind as you add your own; every new block type and mob is drawn per chunk.
Where your game starts
A survival sandbox is a long list of systems, and this one already has most of them: crafting, smelting, farming, hunger, tool tiers, sieges. What makes a game of it is the reason to keep playing. Decide what yours is, a story, a goal at the end, a creative mode, multiplayer with friends, and cut what does not serve it.
The template also leans into an uneasy mood with its odd world events. Keep it, or strip it out for a calmer building game; either way, change the art and the name so the world is yours.
A starting project for this is the simulation game templates.
Questions
- Is this a Minecraft clone I can sell?
- It is an original voxel survival template, open source under the MIT licence, and you can build a commercial game on it. Give it your own art, name and identity: the genre is open, another game's look and name are not.
- Does it have multiplayer?
- No, it is single-player. Adding networked play to a voxel world is a large change: the world state, chunk updates and every interaction have to be synchronised.
- Will it run on a low-end PC?
- It is built for a steady 60 frames a second with greedy meshing and off-thread chunk builds. Large view distances and many mobs still cost frames; profile with the Godot debugger as you add content.
