Kick makes getting to school one long soccer trick
3 min read
Most sports games put you on a pitch. Kick puts the pitch on the walk to school, and the ball has to survive the whole commute.
The commute is the course
The pitch is one action: you kick a soccer ball on your way to school through beautiful yet challenging levels. Not a match. Not a season. A walk, a ball, and whatever the street puts between you and the bell.
Sports games usually rent you a stadium and a scoreboard. Kick throws the stadium out. The street furniture is the defence. A kerb, a slope, a gap that would be nothing on foot becomes a problem the moment the ball has to come with you. You are not beating a team. You are getting the object to class.
That only works if the kick is the whole language. A commute with a ball as flavour is a cutscene you tap through. A commute where the ball is how you move, how you clear a gap, and how you fail is a system. Miss the contact and you are late. Keep it alive and the city reads as a set of tricks.
One verb that has to keep paying
We wrote about this in the secret of Mario's jump — a good verb is not a button, it is a sentence you can say in a dozen rooms. Kick is betting the whole walk on that. If the kick only scores, the levels are a highlight reel. If the kick is how you climb, stall, and recover, the walk stays interesting after the first pretty street.
How to make a good platforming character is the other half. The kid is only as good as the contact. Forgiving input, readable bounce, a ball that tells you why it went the wrong way. A physics toy that fights the player is not skill. A physics toy that answers a clean kick is a character.
Juice has to sit on that contact, not on the skybox. Secrets of game feel and juice is about making the core action feel alive before anything clever is added. A kick that hangs, a ball that complains when you scuff it, a landing you can hear — that is the commute becoming play. A pretty route with a mute ball is wallpaper.
Making the walk to class the match
Kick is by nospacelost, published by Shoreline Games, listed as 2026 on Windows. Adventure, Indie, Sports, single-player. English with nine other languages on the store. A demo is up. The store About text is still empty; the pitch that is there is the commute, the ball, and the levels packed with unique challenges.
The listed loop is kick, clear, get to school. That is a small set, which is the right size if the streets keep asking new questions of the same contact. A soccer game that only restates a match is a pitch. A soccer game that makes the walk to class the match is a system.
If the appeal is one object you are not allowed to drop, Keep It Up! is the other one on this list — the balloon is the whole team. Kick lets you kick a soccer ball on your way to school.
