Hubert makes herding sheep the way you see the farm

3 min read

Most adventure games put you in a person who owns a dog. Hubert puts you in the dog, and the farm only makes sense from the nose.

The job is the camera

The pitch is one action: you play as a working shepherd dog protecting his flock and the only human who trusts him. Herd the sheep. Track a scent. Bark when the woods start answering back. The farm is the workplace. The dog is how you are allowed to read it.

Creature games usually dress you as an animal and then hand you a person's job: talk, craft, open menus. Hubert is trying the other way. Movement, scent, instinct, curiosity. If the flock scatters, that is the HUD. If Lily trusts you, that is the save file. If something in the trees knows your name, that is the plot trying to walk on four legs.

That only works if herding is not a minigame. A bark that only plays a cute sound is flavour. A bark that turns a dozen goldfish-brained sheep is a verb. The farmer has no patience. The sheep have none either. You are the only one in the field whose job is to keep the group a group.

Trust is a control scheme

We wrote about this in Ico, and design by subtraction — a quiet game can get louder by removing the extra verbs. Hubert is already loud with fur. The cut still applies. If the dog needs a map, a quest log, and a human inventory, the paws are a costume. If the dog only needs to herd, sniff, and stay with Lily, the farm can do the rest.

Controllers control everything is the other half. The same stick has to mean a working animal, not a third-person tourist. A bark that is a button and a bark that is a tool are different games. The bet is that one mapping stays legible while the flock panics.

Herding is also talking without words. How Overcooked's kitchens force you to communicate is about layouts that make silence expensive. Here the expensive thing is a sheep in the trees. You cannot quietly do your part. The flock does not care whose turn it was to watch the gate.

What you actually get

Hubert is by Brocap Studio, self-published, listed as October 2026 on Windows. Action, Adventure, Casual, Indie, single-player, with achievements. English plus thirteen other languages on the store. A demo is up.

The listed loop is herd, sniff, guard, follow what calls from the woods. That is a small set, which is the right size if the bond with Lily keeps doing work. A dog mascot that only chases sheep is a costume. A dog that has to choose the farm over the wild is a system.

If the appeal is playing the creature instead of the person holding the leash, the untitled werewolf game is the other one on this list — sprinting on all fours is the combat. Hubert lets you protect the flock from inside it.
