PopupDialog in Godot 4: it is Popup now

By Eduardo Orellana · Updated

PopupDialog is replaced by Popup in Godot 4, and every popup is a Window now rather than a Control. In a Godot 4 project, PopupDialog.new() fails to parse with Identifier "PopupDialog" not declared in the current scope. Did you mean to use "Popup"?.

What Godot is checking

GDScript resolves every name when the script loads. PopupDialog is not a class in Godot 4, so the analyzer stops before anything runs, and because the name is in Godot's own table of Godot 3 renames, the message names the replacement.

The converter carries PopupDialog to Popup and WindowDialog to Window. Because popups are Windows, they are shown with popup() or popup_centered(), sized with size, and hidden when they lose focus. The ready-made dialogs, AcceptDialog and ConfirmationDialog, are Windows too but not Popups, as the run shows, so they do not hide on losing focus.

Reproduce it

A Godot 3 script that creates a PopupDialog in code, in a Godot 4 project.

extends Node

func _ready():
	var popup = PopupDialog.new()
	print(popup)

What Godot 4.7.2 prints

Godot Engine v4.7.2.stable.mono.official.ed1daf0bf - https://godotengine.org

SCRIPT ERROR: Parse Error: Identifier "PopupDialog" not declared in the current scope. Did you mean to use "Popup"?
   at: GDScript::reload (res://answers/popupdialog-in-godot-4/repro.gd:4)
ERROR: Failed to load script "res://answers/popupdialog-in-godot-4/repro.gd" with error "Parse error".

Fix it

A Popup, and a ConfirmationDialog, the usual replacement for a dialog, with what each extends.

extends Node

func _ready() -> void:
	var popup := Popup.new()
	add_child(popup)
	print("Popup extends ", ClassDB.get_parent_class("Popup"))
	var dialog := ConfirmationDialog.new()
	dialog.dialog_text = "Quit to the menu?"
	add_child(dialog)
	dialog.confirmed.connect(func(): print("confirmed"))
	print("ConfirmationDialog extends ", ClassDB.get_parent_class("ConfirmationDialog"), ", AcceptDialog extends ", ClassDB.get_parent_class("AcceptDialog"))

What the fixed script prints

Godot Engine v4.7.2.stable.mono.official.ed1daf0bf - https://godotengine.org

Popup extends Window
ConfirmationDialog extends AcceptDialog, AcceptDialog extends Window

Verified on Godot 4.7.2

Both scripts on this page were run headless on Godot 4.7.2 (4.7.2.stable.mono.official.ed1daf0bf) on 18 October 2026, and the output above is what Godot printed, unedited.

Questions

Why does my popup close when I click elsewhere?
Popup hides when it loses focus. Use a Window, or AcceptDialog, for one that stays.
How do I make a popup embedded in the game window?
Popups are embedded by default (display/window/subwindows/embed_subwindows), drawn inside the main window.
