Ten cards you brought with you, one opponent, one rule for how much you may spend. Hearthstone (Blizzard Entertainment, 2014) is the mana crystal. Marvel Snap (Second Dinner, 2022) is the location that changes the rule. Inscryption (Daniel Mullins Games, 2021) is the card that might be lying, which is a later cruelty. This is not a deck you grow in the dungeon. That is the deckbuilder. The AI card game maker and the card game maker are the hand you arrived with.

What the template starts with
The card battler template starts with ten cards, one opponent and one mana rule. That is the smallest version of the loop that defines the genre: draw, play, attack, respond.
What to change first
Play a cheap card and an expensive one on the same rule. The expensive one should be impossible on turn one. If it is not, you do not have a resource. You have a hand of buttons.
