Rail shooter template
You do not choose the walking. Star Fox 64 (Nintendo, 1997) puts you on a rail through the shooting. The House of the Dead (Sega, 1996) puts you in a corridor that moves. Rez Infinite (Enhance Games, 2016) makes the rail a track. Aim, fire, dodge. Exploring is a different template. The AI shooter maker is the aim. It will let you walk unless you take the walking away.

What the template starts with
The rail shooter template starts with one path, a crosshair and targets that appear. That is the smallest version of the loop that defines the genre: aim, fire, dodge, keep moving.
What to change first
Play a stretch where dodging is required and shooting is required, and neither is optional. If you can look at the scenery and live, the rail is a cutscene.
