What the template starts with
The Pokémon style template starts with three creatures, a three-way type chart and one trainer battle.
Catch, raise, battle, and a type you can say: water beats fire. Pokémon (Game Freak, 1996) organised a whole sport around that sentence. Three creatures is enough. A hunt where you carve one boss and leave is the other style on this template. Stay in 2D until the type rule is visible in the battle, not in a wiki.
What to change first
Win one battle because of type and lose one because you ignored it. If both feel the same, the chart is trivia. The AI monster collector game maker is the catch.
