What the template starts with
The Elden Ring style template starts with a small open field, one landmark, one hard enemy you can leave and return to, and a checkpoint.
A boss that is too hard is a direction, not a wall. Elden Ring (FromSoftware, 2022) puts the same stamina fight in a field where you can leave, and a landmark on the horizon is the invitation. The horse is how the distance stays kind. Do not start with a legacy dungeon that has only one exit. 3D, and the first field should be small enough that the landmark is still a walk.
What to change first
Place one hard enemy you are allowed to ignore, and one landmark you are not. If the player is trapped with the enemy, you wanted the Dark Souls style instead. The AI soulslike maker covers the fight. The leaving is the difference.
