Free Unity AI alternatives: your own agent over MCP, Aura, Bezi, or Godot

6 min readBy Eduardo Orellana · · Updated

We make Flockbay. Every other tool here was read from its own site on 25 October 2026.

Unity AI is not free: on the free Unity Personal plan its in-Editor assistant is a 14-day trial, then $10 a month for 1,000 credits, and Unity Pro, at $210 a month, includes 2,000 credits a month; only its CLI, MCP server and plugin for outside agents are free, by Unity's own pages on 1 November 2026. The free Unity AI alternatives are Flockbay, which we make and which builds Godot games with AI for free, on free AI to start or your own Claude or ChatGPT, and the coding agent you may already pay for (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or GitHub Copilot) connected to the Unity Editor over MCP; Aura and Bezi are paid assistants inside the Editor. Unity itself has retired the "Unity AI" name, and every other vendor here was read on its own pages on 25 October 2026.

Unity AI alternatives, in one answer

If you already pay for Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, use that agent inside Unity: Unity's own MCP server and AI gateway let it work in the Editor without Unity's credits, and open-source servers such as MCP for Unity do the same on older Unity versions. If you want an assistant built into the Editor that is not Unity's, Aura (from the team behind Coplay) and Bezi are the two with public prices. If you would rather leave Unity, Godot is free under the MIT license, and Flockbay, which we make, builds Godot games with AI.

The table at the end lists the pages behind every row. Unity's own pages disagree in two places, and where they do, this page says which page says what.

What Unity AI is now

Unity has dropped the name. Its AI page says "We're retiring the 'Unity AI' brand name" and describes the pieces by what they do: an in-Editor assistant, an AI gateway, an MCP server, an official plugin for coding agents, and the Unity CLI. Unity Muse, the earlier product on Unity's own models, is deprecated.

The assistant answers questions, writes code and takes actions in the Editor, and its generators make sprites, textures, materials, 3D objects, sound, music, animation clips, skyboxes and video. It runs on third-party models hosted by Unity, from Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, Kimi K3 and Z.ai's GLM families, and its generators use partners including Scenario, Layer and Uthana. Training Unity's models on your content is off by default, and Unity says you own your input and output.

It is still a beta. A Unity support article from June 2026 says it is "intended mainly for evaluation and test projects, not full production use". Unity's AI page says it needs Unity 6.0 or later; its beta user guide says the assistant needs Editor 6.3 or newer.

What Unity's AI tools cost

Unity Pro, Enterprise and Industry include the assistant. Unity Pro is $210 a month, or from $2,310 a year, and comes with 2,000 Unity Credits a month per seat; Enterprise and Industry get 3,000. Unity Personal is free, and its AI is a 14-day trial that then renews at $10 a month for 1,000 credits.

Credits are spent per request. Unity's credit page puts an assistant message at anywhere from 4 to 1,500 or more credits, depending on the request and the model tier, and a generated 3D model at 8 to 13. Credits reset each billing cycle and do not roll over; at zero, the AI features pause until the reset or a purchase. One-time bundles run from $20 for 2,000 credits to $10,000 for 1.25 million, last 12 months and are not refundable. Unity also says it may change consumption rates "at any time without prior notice".

Use the agent you already pay for, inside Unity

This is the cheapest alternative, and Unity now supports it itself. Its AI gateway lets Claude Code, Codex, Gemini or Cursor run in the Assistant window and act in the Editor, and Unity says using a third-party agent this way "will not consume Unity credits". Its MCP server, now installed through the Unity CLI, lets an agent drive the Editor from outside it. Unity's AI page calls the MCP server free with no concurrency limits; its plans table lists 3 to 5 concurrent MCP connections per plan, so check your plan before relying on several agents at once.

Open-source MCP servers do the same job without Unity's packages, and they reach older Editors. MCP for Unity (CoplayDev, MIT, about 15,400 GitHub stars) gives any MCP client 50 tools for assets, scenes, scripts and tests on Unity 2021.3 LTS to 6. Unity-MCP by Ivan Murzak (Apache-2.0, about 4,500 stars) ships more than 70 tools, and MCP Unity by CoderGamester (MIT, about 2,000 stars) targets Unity 6. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and GitHub Copilot all document MCP support, so the agent you pay for is the AI; the server is free.

In-Editor assistants that are not Unity's

Aura is the agent for Unity and Unreal from the team behind Coplay, which now says it is part of Aura. Its plans are Indie, listed at $10 a month (shown down from $20), Pro at $40 and Ultimate at $200, each with a free two-week trial; the Indie plan includes unlimited MCP use with outside agents. It supports Unity 2022.3 LTS and newer. Aura may train on what you give it in chats, and its unlimited Auto Mode requires training to be on. Coplay's own plans remain: free, or Professional at $20 a month with $20 of credits charged at provider cost.

Bezi is an engine plugin for Unity and Unreal that, in its docs' words, "does not use an MCP connection" to make changes. Its plans are Pro at $20 a month with 800 credits, Advanced at $60 with 2,400 and Ultimate at $180 with 7,200, with a free trial and on-demand usage at API pricing; teams start at $200 a month for three seats. Bezi says your code and assets are never used to train AI models.

Or leave Unity: Godot, with an AI that builds the game

Godot is free and open source under the MIT license, and its license page says you are the sole copyright owner of what you make. It has no seat price and no revenue threshold. What it does not have is Unity's console pipelines and Asset Store, and moving a finished Unity game means rewriting it, so leaving makes most sense for a new project. Unity to Godot covers the move.

We make Flockbay, so read this part as ours. Flockbay is a free AI game maker built on the official Godot engine: its AI builds and play-tests a real Godot 4 project, on free hosted AI to start or on your own Claude or ChatGPT, agent or API key. It does not work inside Unity, and it is not a way to keep a Unity project. An AI alternative to Unity compares the two engines in more detail.

Questions

Is Unity AI free?
Not on its own. Unity Pro, Enterprise and Industry include its AI tools with monthly credits; Unity Personal gets a 14-day trial that renews at $10 a month for 1,000 credits. Unity says its MCP server is free.
Can I use Claude Code or Codex with Unity?
Yes. Unity's AI gateway runs Claude Code, Codex, Gemini and Cursor in the Editor without Unity credits, and Unity's MCP server or an open-source one such as MCP for Unity connects any MCP client.
Is Unity Muse still available?
No. Unity calls Muse a deprecated product; its AI tools now use third-party models and the "Unity AI" name is being retired.
Does Unity's AI train on my project?
Training Unity's models on your content is off by default, and Unity says its partner model providers do not train on your data.
