Steam Cloud saves for a Godot game

A Godot game can use Steam Cloud two ways. Steam Auto-Cloud needs no code: in Steamworks you tell Steam which folder to sync, such as the folder Godot's user:// resolves to (on Windows, under %APPDATA%\Godot\app_userdata\<project name> unless you set a custom user directory), and Steam uploads and restores it around each session. Or use the Remote Storage API through GodotSteam to write and read cloud files yourself. Auto-Cloud suits most indie games.
Most games need no cloud code at all
Steam Auto-Cloud watches a folder you name and syncs it when the game starts and quits. If your save files live in one folder, which in Godot they do (user://), you can turn on Steam Cloud entirely in Steamworks.
Route 1: Auto-Cloud
- In Steamworks, open Steam Cloud settings, set a byte and file quota, and enable Auto-Cloud.
- Add a root path per platform pointing at where user:// lives. On Windows that is the roaming app data folder, under Godot\app_userdata\<your project name>, unless you set application/config/use_custom_user_dir, in which case it is your custom name.
- Restrict it to your save files with a pattern (for example *.save) so logs and caches are not synced.
- Publish, then test on two machines.
Set the project name or custom user directory before release: changing it later moves the saves.
Route 2: the Remote Storage API
For control over what syncs and when, GodotSteam exposes Steam's Remote Storage functions, such as writing and reading a named cloud file. Use it when saves are large, when you want to merge conflicts yourself, or when the game writes files outside one folder. It needs the same Steam Cloud quota set in Steamworks.
Pitfalls
- Saving while the game is quitting can race Auto-Cloud's upload; save at checkpoints instead.
- Settings files are per machine (resolution, keybinds); keep them out of the cloud pattern.
- Test a conflict: play offline on one machine, then online on another.
Where Flockbay fits
Flockbay builds games on the official Godot engine with saves in user://, which suits Auto-Cloud. Ask its AI for cloud saves through GodotSteam and it writes them into your project. Building is free.
Questions
- Does Steam Cloud need code in Godot?
- Not with Steam Auto-Cloud: you point Steamworks at the save folder. The Remote Storage API through GodotSteam is the coded alternative.
