Does Godot have AI? Two different answers

"Does Godot have AI" means two different things. Godot has plenty of game AI built in: navigation, pathfinding and animation state machines. What its editor does not ship is a generative AI assistant. For that, you add a plugin or a tool.

Game AI: yes, built in

Godot 4 includes a navigation system for finding paths around obstacles, with NavigationAgent2D and NavigationAgent3D nodes that move characters along them.

It has AnimationTree with state machines for character animation, RayCast and Area nodes for sight and hearing checks, and timers and signals for simple decision-making.

For behaviour trees, community plugins such as LimboAI add them; LimboAI is MIT licensed and available as a GDExtension.

Generative AI in the editor: not built in

The Godot editor does not ship a chat assistant or code generator. Godot is open source and community-run, and AI help comes from plugins and outside tools.

Adding an AI assistant to Godot

AI Assistant Hub is a free plugin that adds chat assistants to the code editor, including local models through Ollama. Ziva is a paid plugin with an agent inside the editor.

MCP servers such as the free godot-mcp or the paid GDAI MCP let outside agents like Claude Code or Cursor control the editor.

Tools built on Godot with AI

Some tools put Godot inside an app with AI on top. Flockbay is a desktop app with Godot 4.7.2 inside, where an AI writes the GDScript and builds the world after you approve a brief.

The result is still a normal Godot project you can open in the Godot editor.

A small example of built-in game AI

Take a guard that patrols between two points, notices the player nearby, and chases along a path around walls. It needs three built-in pieces: an Area for noticing, a NavigationAgent for the path, and a variable holding the guard's state.

No plugin and no language model is involved. This is what most games mean by AI, and Godot handles it well out of the box.

Generative AI is a different tool for a different job: helping you write that code, not running inside the game.

Which you need

If you want enemies that chase and patrol, Godot's built-in navigation and state machines are enough. If you want help writing code, add an assistant. If you want the code written for you, use a tool built on Godot.
