# Port a Godot game to Steam, Steam Deck included

A Godot game needs no porting to reach Steam: it needs a Windows build, a store page and, for online play, Steamworks. Flockbay opens your existing Godot project, exports the Windows build, drafts the store page as a .zip, and writes GodotSteam into the game when you want Steam multiplayer. You upload the build and the page in Steamworks yourself.

## There is nothing to port, only things to add

Brotato was made in Godot and went on sale on Steam in 2022 without being ported anywhere. Godot exports a native Windows executable, and a native Windows executable is what Steam sells. The word "port" usually means rewriting a game for a machine it was not made for. A Godot game on Steam is the same game, with a few things added around it.

Those things are a release build, a store page, the Steamworks integration if you want achievements, the overlay or online play, and a check that the game reads well on a Steam Deck. None of them touches your gameplay code.

Flockbay opens your project as it is. On Home, choose Open an existing Godot project… and pick the folder. Flockbay lists what it adds before it writes anything, [records every file it adds](/docs/open-an-existing-godot-project/), and takes it all out again when you ask. A project from an older Godot 4 opens as a copy or upgrades in place; a [Godot 3 project is converted on a copy](/godot-3-to-godot-4/).

## The Windows build is one menu away

In the game menu, Ship, then Export for Windows…. You get an .exe, with the libraries of any GDExtension the game uses, GodotSteam included, beside it. The first export downloads Godot's export templates once; after that a build takes a few minutes.

The build is not code-signed. Steam does not need it to be, since Steam installs it, but anyone you send the .exe to directly sees a Windows security warning until they press More info, then Run anyway.

For a Linux or macOS build, open the project in Godot and use Godot's own export, under Project, then Export. Flockbay's Export makes Windows builds only.

## The Steam Deck runs your Windows build

A Steam Deck runs Windows games through Proton, Valve's compatibility layer, so the Windows build you upload is the one a Deck plays. A native Linux build from Godot's own export works too, but most Godot games on the Deck run the Windows build through Proton without trouble.

What decides the Deck badge is not the engine. Valve's Deck Verified review checks that the game plays fully on a controller, that text is legible on a 1280 by 800 screen, that it starts at a resolution the Deck supports, and that no launcher or keyboard-only prompt stands in the way. In Godot terms that means InputMap actions bound to joypad buttons as well as keys, UI built from Control nodes that scale with the window, and a font size that survives a seven-inch screen.

Ask Flockbay for those by name. It adds joypad events to your input actions, sets the stretch mode and aspect so the UI scales, and plays the game itself to check, sending input events and taking viewport captures. Then you play it, ideally on a Deck, and say what reads badly.

## Flockbay prepares the store page; Steamworks is yours

Under Ship, the Steam page section drafts the store page the way a publisher would: the short and long description, the content survey, the AI disclosure, the capsules and library art, and screenshots taken from the game. Each drafted field says so and has Undo. Review & export packs it as a .zip, with each field as a text file, the images in the sizes Steamworks asks for, and a README naming the Steamworks page each part goes on.

You upload the page and the build in Steamworks yourself. Flockbay does not sign you up, pay the fee or submit anything. Steam Direct charges one app fee per game, and Valve reviews the store page and the build before either goes live; plan for a Coming Soon page that is up for weeks before release, because wishlists collect there.

Steam page drafting by Flockbay is free in beta for every account until December 1, then a paid feature. Filling in the page by hand and its .zip export stay free.

## Online play on Steam is GodotSteam, written into your game

For multiplayer in the game you ship, ask Flockbay to add Steam multiplayer and give it your App ID; Valve's Spacewar test app, 480, works until you have one. Flockbay writes an autoload on GodotSteam, the Steamworks GDExtension: it starts Steam, opens a friends-only lobby, opens the overlay's invite dialog, and sets a SteamMultiplayerPeer as the game's multiplayer peer.

Your RPCs, MultiplayerSpawner and MultiplayerSynchronizer do not change, because they run on whichever peer is set. While you build, Play uses Flockbay's test rooms instead, so a second window or a friend's playtest can join without Steam. The exported game carries none of Flockbay's room code. [How the two fit together](/docs/multiplayer/).

The autoload is an ordinary GDScript file in your project. Read it, change it, or replace it with your own Steamworks code.

## Questions

### Does Flockbay upload my game to Steam?

No. Flockbay exports the Windows build and prepares the store page as a .zip. You upload both in Steamworks yourself, with SteamPipe for the build, and Valve reviews them before anything goes live.

### Do I need to rewrite my Godot game for the Steam Deck?

No. The Deck runs the Windows build through Proton. What it needs is full controller support and UI that reads at 1280 by 800, which are changes to input actions and Control layout, not a rewrite.

### Can I keep using plain Godot after opening the project in Flockbay?

Yes. The project stays an ordinary Godot 4 project on your disk. Flockbay records what it adds in .flockbay/added.json, and Remove Flockbay from this project takes it out again.

### Does the exported game include Flockbay?

No. The build is your Godot game and the GDExtension libraries it uses. Flockbay's test rooms, sign-in and overlay stay in the app.

### What does it cost?

Flockbay is free, its Export and the Steam page's .zip export included. Steam's app fee is Valve's and is paid in Steamworks.
