# A free Unity alternative, and what you are really escaping

Unity Personal is already free for most people making their first game. So when someone searches for a free alternative, the money is usually standing in for something else: trust, weight, or the fact that they cannot program. Flockbay is free, AI included: free hosted AI every day, or your own Claude, ChatGPT, agent or API key. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, on the official Godot engine.

## Unity is good, and this page should say so

Unity has the deepest learning ecosystem in the industry. Whatever you are stuck on, someone has recorded a video about it, and that is worth more to a beginner than any feature. Its asset store is enormous. Its mobile support is genuinely excellent. It is what most studio job listings ask for.

It is also free below a substantial revenue threshold, which means almost nobody reading this would be paying for it. If your reason for leaving is purely the price, examine that first, because you may be solving a problem you do not have.

What people do carry from Unity is a wariness about the terms changing under them. That is a fair thing to weigh, and it is not something we can promise our way out of either. What we can point at is Godot, which is open source, which means [the engine underneath](/what-is-godot/) cannot be repriced by anyone.

## The reason that is usually underneath

Most people who leave Unity did not leave over licensing. They left because after several weeks of tutorials they still could not make the game they wanted, and switching tools felt like progress.

It usually is not. Godot on its own is lighter and pleasanter than Unity but it is the same job: you write the code, in a different language. Unreal is the same job with a steeper renderer. The bottleneck was never which engine.

That is the specific thing Flockbay changes. Godot is underneath, so the capability is real, and Flockbay does the job: it agrees a brief with you, builds the world, writes [the GDScript inside your project](/what-is-gdscript/) and runs the game to check its own work. You play the result and say what is wrong. The programming curriculum is not on the path.

## What you would give up

The ecosystem, honestly. Unity has more tutorials, more assets and more people who can help you than we will have for a long time. If your working method is following videos, that gap is real.

Mobile. Unity treats [phones as a first-class target](/mobile-game-maker/) and Flockbay does not: its Export makes a native Windows game. The project is ordinary Godot, so Godot's own Android or iOS export is there if you take that step yourself.

And the browser-free constraint is ours too: Flockbay is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, downloaded and installed, with the game running locally on the bundled Godot. Building needs [an internet connection](/answers/does-flockbay-work-offline/) because the chat, asset generation and world data come over the network. Playing what you built does not.

## What you would gain

The code stops being the obstacle. That is the whole proposition and everything else is detail.

Flockbay builds the world too, and a new project settles 2D or 3D before it creates anything. Plenty of people leaving Unity were always making a flat game, and that is not the lesser half here. In 3D Flockbay builds terrain, water, weather, buildings and characters. In 2D it lays tile ground, with the tiles, the edges and the collision all following from which cells are ground, and puts sprites at an exact position — 55,073 of the Catalogue's 60,648 objects are sprites, searchable by name with a picture of each. The same tools are buttons in the Godot editor, so a hill or a crate you would rather place yourself is one drag away, with Godot's undo. Nobody is assembling prefabs and wiring components.

You judge the result by playing it. And your project stays a Godot project, in a format that belongs to an open source engine rather than to a company.

On price: free to download, and free to build with. [Flockbay is free, AI included](/answers/what-does-flockbay-cost/): free hosted AI every day, or your Claude or ChatGPT plan, your own agent, or an API key. No revenue share, no export gate, no seat pricing.

## A way to decide in an afternoon

Take the one mechanic that made you want to build this game. Not the setting, not the art style. The mechanic. Then try to get it working, badly, in whichever tool you are considering.

In Unity that is a scripting exercise, and how it goes tells you honestly whether programming is a road you want to be on. Some people find out they like it, and if that is you, Unity or Godot directly is the right home and you should go.

Here it is a description followed by [playing the result](/blog/how-to-judge-a-game-you-did-not-code/). If the mechanic is in your hands within an hour and it is dull, that is the most useful thing you could have learned today, and you learned it before spending a season on the wrapping.

## Questions

### Is Unity actually not free?

Unity Personal is free below a revenue threshold most first games never approach. Cost is rarely the real reason people look elsewhere.

### Is Godot a good Unity replacement?

For most 2D and many 3D games, yes, and it is open source. It still requires you to program, which is the part Flockbay removes.

### Can I import a Unity project?

No. Unity scenes and C# do not convert to a Godot project. Art and audio you own move across; the rest is rebuilt.

### Does Flockbay take a revenue share?

No, and there is no export gate. Flockbay never takes a cut of what you sell.

### Can I make mobile games with it?

Not from Flockbay. Its Export makes a native Windows build. The project opens in stock Godot, whose own export reaches Android and iOS, but Unity is the better choice if mobile is your target.
