# Flockbay vs Summer Engine: a free alternative on the official Godot

Flockbay is a free Summer Engine alternative: both are AI game makers built on Godot 4.7.2, and Flockbay's hosted AI is free every day, where Summer's starts at $20 a month. Flockbay builds and play-tests the whole game on the official Godot release, inside Godot's own editor; Summer runs its own engine, which it calls fully custom. Both are free with your own agent over MCP. Flockbay is free, AI included: free hosted AI every day, or your own Claude, ChatGPT, agent or API key. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, on the official Godot engine.

As of 29 Sep 2026. Flockbay builds and play-tests a whole Godot game for free: free AI every day or your own Claude or ChatGPT, on the official Godot engine. Pick it for a real Godot 4 project, an AI that builds from a brief you approve, and its world tools in the full Godot editor. Pick Summer Engine if you want C++ beside GDScript, or want its public CLI setup and long written guides. Flockbay runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and needs an internet connection to build.

## Flockbay vs Summer Engine starts with which Godot you get

Both are desktop apps where an AI builds the game and you play it, and both start from the same place: Godot 4.7.2. What happens after that is the whole difference.

Flockbay bundles the official Godot 4.7.2 release, not a fork. The AI writes GDScript and scenes into [a real Godot 4 project](/godot-ai/) on your own disk. Stock Godot 4.7.2 opens the same folder, and you can read and change every file there or in your own code editor, with the Godot docs and your version-control habits as they are.

Summer Engine says its engine is "built on the Godot 4.7.2 foundation" and, in its own words, "a fully custom engine at this point, with more than a million lines of custom code". It says it always follows Godot upstream and "stays backward compatible with Godot". Its changelog lists rendering, input and editor fixes of its own, and exported games run on its own export templates. That is real engineering, and it also means your game depends on Summer's build of the engine rather than Godot's.

## In Flockbay the AI builds the world, and its tools sit in the Godot editor

Flockbay's AI starts with a brief: questions one round at a time, each with a recommendation, then what gets built first, what comes after and what is not in this version. Nothing is built until you approve it. Then it builds the world with world tools, as real nodes and resources in the scene tree: terrain, water, sky, weather, plants, the player controller, characters and props in 3D, tile ground, a scenery band and sprites in 2D. It writes the GDScript and the scenes, then play-tests its own work: it runs the game, sends input events, reads stdout and the debugger, and captures the viewport.

You play it and say what is wrong. When a call is pure taste, the same world tools are a row of buttons around the Godot editor's own 3D and 2D view: Sculpt, Paint, Plants, Place, Water, Sky, Weather, Player controller, NPCs and Camera in 3D, and Paint, Place and Player controller in 2D. They act on the live scene, and Godot's own undo takes a change back. The app's Game screen only plays, and every Play is a fresh run.

Summer puts its AI in its own editor: "Summer AI lives in the desktop app." Its Design Mode lets you click nodes or draw on the 2D and 3D viewport to tell the AI what to change.

Flockbay's editor is Godot's own, with the chat in a dock. It opens in a Simple view: the 3D or 2D view, the Scene dock, the Inspector, Output and the Debugger, and the Script editor when a script opens. Full, one switch away, brings back the rest: FileSystem, the main menu and the Asset Library. Godot's own run bar stays put away, because Play is the app's.

## Your own agent over MCP is free in both

Flockbay speaks MCP, so Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or any MCP client can build the game you have open. It is one server, registered as flockbay-stage. It is free with a free Flockbay account; you pay your agent's provider, as you already do.

Your agent gets what Flockbay's own AI gets. It can shape the world through the same controls you have: terrain, water, sky, weather, the player controller and props (four of them in a 2D world). It can edit the game through the open Godot editor, with undo. And it can playtest the game: run it, read stdout and errors, capture viewports, inject input events, and read and change the live scene tree.

In the app, Connectors, then Connect your agent (MCP), then Set up writes the line with your machine's paths filled in, and you paste it once. For Claude Code it has this shape, with the three paths as placeholders:

```
claude mcp add --scope user flockbay-stage -e "FLOCKBAY_LOCAL_STAGE_CAPABILITY_AUTHORITY_DESCRIPTOR=<descriptor>" -- "<node>" "<coordinator>" --external-stage-mcp
```

## Summer sets up your agent with a public CLI

Summer says "MCP is free", and its docs include local MCP on every plan. Its setup is public commands you can read before you run them: install, login, then npx -y summer-engine@latest setup <agent> --yes, which writes the MCP config and installs Summer's game-dev skills. Its MCP page counts 86 tools, and its pricing lists "MCP skills and hooks" on Pro+, the $60 plan. That installer is a real strength: Flockbay's line comes from the app, and there is no public Flockbay CLI.

Flockbay also runs its own chat on your Claude plan (Pro or Max), a ChatGPT sign-in (any plan, Free included) or your own API key (OpenAI or Anthropic), free. Summer's docs say it "does not accept your own provider API keys for hosted generation"; your own model reaches Summer through MCP.

## Flockbay vs Summer Engine pricing

Flockbay is free, and so is its AI. Every account gets free AI each day on the hosted model, called Demo, and it comes back the next day. You can also build on your Claude plan, your ChatGPT plan, your own agent or your own API key, and you pay that company, never Flockbay. Pictures and sound run on the free AI. A 3D model uses your own Tripo key. Plans for more hosted AI are optional: Hobby $20, Indie Developer $60 and Studio $200 a month. Past a plan's usage, you can turn on on-demand usage, billed as you go up to a limit you set. [What Flockbay costs](/answers/what-does-flockbay-cost/) has the details.

Summer's plans are Pro at $20, Pro+ at $60 and Ultra at $200 a month; yearly billing saves 20%, and a $5 Basic plan is offered inside the app. Past a plan's limit you can add on-demand usage "at the same API rates". Its free tier reads "Try hosted Summer AI when you create an account".

## Both run the game on your machine and can play-test it

In Flockbay the game runs on your computer, on the copy of Godot the app brings with it; nothing is streamed. Building needs an internet connection, because the AI, generation and world data come over the network. Playing what you built does not. When the game is ready, Flockbay exports a native Windows build and prepares the Steam store page as a .zip you upload in Steamworks yourself. The project is an ordinary Godot 4 project, so Godot's own export can take it to other platforms.

Summer's MCP tools include playing and stopping the game, screenshots, the console and debugger errors, and it exports desktop builds for Steam or itch.io.

## What Flockbay does not do yet

Flockbay runs on 64-bit Windows, Apple Silicon Macs and x86_64 Linux. It needs an internet connection to build, never to play. It is closed source: the app, the world tools and Flockbay's instructions are ours, while the engine is Godot and your project is yours. C# runs too: the .NET tools download the first time a game uses C#, and new code is GDScript unless the game is already C# or you ask for C#.

Summer ships on macOS and Windows today, writes C++, GDScript and C#, and publishes its CLI, skills and hooks under MIT on GitHub, along with its game templates. Its engine source is not published.

## Questions

### Is Summer Engine a fork of Godot?

Summer describes itself as "a fully custom engine at this point, with more than a million lines of custom code", built on the Godot 4.7.2 foundation. It says it always follows Godot upstream and stays backward compatible with Godot. Flockbay bundles the official Godot 4.7.2 release instead.

### Can I use Claude Code, Codex or Cursor with Flockbay for free?

Yes. Connecting your own agent over MCP is free with a free Flockbay account. In the app, Connectors, then Connect your agent (MCP), then Set up gives you the line to paste. You pay your agent's provider for the model; Flockbay charges nothing for the connection.

### Can I open a Flockbay game in normal Godot?

Yes. It is an ordinary Godot 4 project in a folder on your disk, and stock Godot 4.7.2 opens it. The code is GDScript you can read and change.

### Does Flockbay run on a Mac?

Yes. The current release is for 64-bit Windows, Apple Silicon Macs and x86_64 Linux. Summer Engine runs on macOS and Windows today, with no Linux installer.

### Is Flockbay open source?

No. The Flockbay app is closed. The engine under it is Godot, under the MIT licence, and the game you make is yours.

### Do I need an internet connection?

To build, yes, always. To play what you already built, no.

### Is Flockbay connected to Summer Engine?

No. Flockbay and Summer Engine are separate products from separate companies.

### Is there a free Summer Engine alternative?

Yes. Flockbay is free, AI included: its hosted AI is free every day, or it runs on your own Claude or ChatGPT, agent or API key, on the official Godot 4.7.2. Summer Engine's app and MCP server are free too, but its hosted AI starts at $20 a month. Flockbay's plans for more hosted AI are optional.
