# The best AI tools for game development, by job

No single AI tool makes a game. Different tools do different jobs well: writing code, building a whole game, making assets, making sound. The useful question is which job you need done, and what each tool charges for it.

## Writing code

GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code are coding assistants that work in your project. They are strongest for developers who can read and review what they write.

Copilot has a free tier and a $10-a-month Pro plan. Cursor has a free Hobby plan and paid plans from $20 a month. Claude Code comes with Claude's paid plans, from $20 a month.

## Building a whole game

AI game makers do more than write code: they set up the project, build the world and wire the game together. Rosebud runs in the browser and makes games you share as a link; its Indie Dev plan is $15 a month.

Flockbay is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux with Godot inside. The AI asks questions, writes a brief, and after you approve it builds the game, world and code, as a Godot project on your disk. Flockbay is free, AI included: free hosted AI every day, or your Claude or ChatGPT plan, your own agent, or an API key.

## 2D and 3D assets

Scenario generates game art and lets you train models on your own style, which helps with consistency. It has 50 free credits a day and paid plans from $15 a month, with commercial licences on paid plans.

Meshy generates 3D models. Its free plan gives 100 credits a month, and free outputs are licensed under CC BY 4.0, which allows commercial use with attribution.

## Sound and music

ElevenLabs generates sound effects on its free plan; commercial use starts with the $6-a-month Starter plan. Suno generates music; its free plan has no commercial rights, and the $8-a-month Pro plan includes them.

For any sound or music you will sell, check the licence on the plan you are using at the time you generate it.

## How to put a toolkit together

Start with the job that costs you most time. For most people who do not program, that is the code, and a whole-game tool saves the most. For programmers, it is usually art or sound.

Add one tool at a time and keep it only if it saves more time than it takes to fix what it makes.

## The rule on Steam

Valve asks developers to disclose AI-generated content when submitting to Steam. Keep a note of which tools made what, so the disclosure is easy and accurate.
