# Best no-code AI game maker: where the ceiling is

Every no-code tool has a ceiling. The only question worth asking is whether yours is a difficulty curve you can climb or a wall you hit at full speed in week two. Flockbay is free, AI included: free hosted AI every day, or your own Claude, ChatGPT, agent or API key. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, on the official Godot engine.

## Two ways a tool can be no-code

The first is by removing code and putting a menu in its place. You get behaviours, blocks, or a visual graph, and your game is assembled from the pieces the tool provides. Everything inside that set is easy. Everything outside it is impossible, and there is no gradient between the two.

The second is by having the code written for you. The code still exists, it is still [real code in a real engine](/ai-game-maker-that-writes-code/), and the set of possible games is whatever that engine can do. What has been removed is the requirement that you write it, not the code itself.

These are both called no-code and they are not remotely the same product. The first is a walled garden. The second is a translator.

## How to spot which one you are looking at

Ask for something slightly odd. A door that only opens if the player is carrying nothing. A weapon that damages the player when it kills something. Enemies that get slower in the rain.

A menu-based tool will have a way to do the first, an awkward workaround for the second, and nothing at all for the third. A tool that writes code will treat all three as the same kind of request, because they are: they are all a few lines of logic in a script.

The second test is where the output lives. A proprietary project file that only opens in one program is a menu tool almost by definition. A project directory in [an open engine's format](/what-is-godot/) is the other kind.

## Which one Flockbay is

The second. Flockbay builds the world and writes GDScript into your project. The project is a real Godot project. There is no catalogue of supported behaviours, no genre templates, and no list of allowed mechanics, which is a deliberate design choice rather than an incomplete feature set.

The reason it matters is the fifth week. Every interesting game contains one mechanic that is specific to it and that nobody anticipated. That mechanic is where a menu tool stops and where this does not.

The trade is that you are not clicking through a wizard. You describe behaviour in ordinary language, you play the result, and you say what is wrong. That loop is the interface.

## The half that is not code gets built too, and stays in reach of your hands

No-code is usually sold as "you describe everything and the machine does everything". That only works when the machine has a plan to work from. Flockbay starts with a brief: questions one round at a time, each with a recommendation, and a written plan of what gets built first. Nothing is built until you approve it.

Then it builds the world with world tools, as real Godot data. In a 3D project that means terrain, water, weather, buildings, characters and lighting. In a 2D one it means tile ground, with the tiles, the edges and the collision all following from which cells are ground, so a ledge is standable the moment it exists, and sprites at an exact position, rotation and scale. You write no code for any of it.

Some calls are pure taste: exactly where the hill sits, which way the river bends. For those, [the same world tools](/plugins/) are buttons around the Godot editor's own view, so you can make the one change by hand, and Godot's undo takes it back. A sentence gets you a valley; your hand can get you the exact valley.

## The practical constraints

Flockbay is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, downloaded and installed. There is no phone version, and the game runs locally on the copy of Godot bundled with it.

[Building needs an internet connection](/answers/does-flockbay-work-offline/), because the chat, asset generation and world data all come over the network. Playing what you built does not.

## What no-code does not remove

It removes writing code. It does not remove design, and the two get confused constantly in this category.

You will still decide [how the jump feels](/blog/secrets-of-game-feel-and-juice/), whether the second area is too long, why the enemy that seemed clever is annoying, and what the game is actually about. Those decisions are the game. Nobody can automate them because they are questions about how a person feels, and the only instrument is a person playing it.

The honest version of the no-code promise is therefore narrower than the marketing usually admits: you are not required to learn a programming language before you are allowed to try. That is a large barrier removed. It is not the same as the work being done.

It is worth saying because the disappointment in this category is nearly always the same shape. Somebody expected the tool to supply judgement and it supplied labour. Labour is a lot. It is just not the thing they were short of.

## Questions

### Will I hit a wall like I did in other no-code tools?

There is no fixed set of supported behaviours to run out of. What limits you is what Godot can do and what you can describe, which is a much higher ceiling than a menu.

### Do I ever have to look at the code?

No. It sits in your project and you can read it if you are curious. The intended loop is that you play the game and judge it.

### Is a visual scripting tool easier?

For very simple logic, sometimes. It gets harder as the logic grows, and a large node graph is code with worse ergonomics.

### What if I want to hand the project to a programmer later?

It is a normal Godot project with normal GDScript in it, so that is a normal handover rather than a migration.

### What does it cost?
